Mountain Biking

There is excellent locations for biking around Bala both mountain biking and recreational cycling on quiet roads. There is excellent mountain biking locally in the Berwyns and Penllyn Forest. Bala is centrally located for many dedicated mountain biking centres and trails, which are easily reachable by car. Below we have listed a few of the top bike routes scattered around the area

A Bala Round affords an easy introduction to the countryside around Bala including Lake Bala (Llyn Tegid). The road, pleasant and well surfaced, runs parallel with the narrow-gauge railway before taking you into open countryside, dominated by the stark profile of Arenig Fawr.

The Mawddach Trail is car free and runs from Dolgellau to Barmouth. The Mawddach estuary is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country and is also a bird sanctuary. The trail, mainly made up from tarmac and gravel, was previously a railway line and is therefore flat! Start at Dolgellau and why not have lunch in Barmouth (cross the estuary via the wooden railway bridge) before your return trip. The George III Hotel Penmaenpool can also provide refreshments.

The 12 mile shoreline of Lake Vyrnwy provides a long flat, circular road, quite a rarity. There is also a bird sanctuary, bike hire and refreshments available or try the Tower Tavern at the Lake Vyrnwy Hotel.
